Almost every ant call we take starts with a trail on a counter, and almost none of them end there. Odorous house ants follow moisture under a slab, fire ants build in open sun-warmed ground, and carpenter ants are living in wood that has already taken water somewhere. Killing the trail tells you nothing about which of the three you have.

So the writing here leans hard on identification. What each species looks like, where the nest actually sits, and what changes about the treatment once you know. The quarterly plan covers most of it as maintenance rather than as an emergency.
