Which Fabrics Mosquitoes Can Bite Through
A mosquito feeds through a long, thin set of mouthparts that slips between fabric threads. If the fabric is thin and pressed against your skin, those mouthparts reach you easily. The CDC's printed bite-prevention guide warns that mosquitoes may bite through thin clothing, which is why it recommends loose fits.
Fit matters as much as fabric. A thin shirt that hangs loose leaves a gap between the cloth and your skin, and many mosquitoes can't reach across it. Pull the same shirt tight across your shoulders or back, and mosquitoes bite right through it. This table compares common clothing.

Why the Color You Wear Matters
Mosquitoes use sight as well as smell. A University of Washington study found that once yellow fever mosquitoes smell the carbon dioxide in your breath, they fly toward red, orange, black and cyan. They ignored green, purple, blue and white.
That's a practical reason to choose lighter colors for evenings outdoors. The yellow fever mosquito lives in Texas, and it's one of the day-biting species people meet in backyards and patios.
Permethrin-Treated Clothing
Permethrin is an insecticide made for fabric, not skin. You can buy clothing that comes pretreated or spray a product labeled for clothing onto shirts, pants, socks and gear, then let it dry before wearing. The CDC's mosquito bite prevention page notes that permethrin-treated clothing keeps protecting after multiple washings and warns never to put permethrin products directly on skin.
It works better on some pests than others. A CDC-hosted field study of factory-treated uniforms found that they still killed most ticks after three months of wear, but killed far fewer mosquitoes. Treat permethrin clothing as an extra layer, not the whole plan.
How to Dress for DFW Mosquitoes
DFW has two shifts of biters. Asian tiger mosquitoes bite during the day, especially in shade and near shrubs, while Culex mosquitoes, the main West Nile carriers here, bite from dusk into the night. Long sleeves and long pants matter most at dusk, but a shady afternoon in the garden needs them too.
Summer heat makes long sleeves hard, so pick loose, lightweight shirts in a tight weave and light colors. Put an EPA-registered repellent on any exposed skin. The CDC lists DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol and 2-undecanone as the active ingredients to look for, and it advises against putting repellent on skin under clothing.
