Water Draws Roaches First

Cockroaches survive far longer without food than without water, so moisture is the first thing to check. A slow leak under the kitchen sink, a sweating pipe behind the washer or a dish rack that never dries can keep a colony going on its own. Pet water bowls left down overnight work the same way.

A cockroach wants a gap thin enough to press its back and belly against both sides. Cracks behind cabinets, the space under a stove and the void behind a dishwasher all fit. Appliances with motors add steady warmth, so the base of a refrigerator or the back of a microwave makes a favorite resting spot.

Cardboard deserves its own warning. Boxes stored in a pantry or garage offer layers of tight space and glue to eat. They also bring roaches in, since roaches and their egg cases often ride home inside grocery boxes and moving cartons.

Roach Droppings Draw More Roaches

Here is the attractant almost nobody talks about. Cockroach droppings carry a scent that tells other roaches a spot is good for shelter. Researchers at NC State found that bacteria in the roach gut produce many of the chemicals in that scent. That finding changes how you clean up. The small dark specks along a cabinet hinge or drawer track aren't just a sign of roaches. They work as a welcome sign for the next ones. Vacuum them up, then wipe the area with soapy water so the scent goes with them.
