Drain flies. They breed in the organic film inside the pipe, and they are common in guest bathrooms where dry traps let them through. Bleach does not fix it, because the film needs scrubbing and an enzyme cleaner to break it down. If they persist after that, it can flag a plumbing leak worth finding early.

Yes, more than most pests. A house fly moves from garbage, pet waste and carrion straight to food surfaces, carrying pathogens including salmonella and E. coli on its body and in every spot it taste-tests. A kitchen with steady fly traffic is being cross-contaminated daily, which is why restaurants take flies so seriously.

It depends on the fly. A UV light trap mounted low and away from windows works best on house flies. A jar of cider vinegar with a drop of dish soap catches fruit flies, and tape over a drain overnight shows whether drain flies breed there. Each trap tells you where the source is, and removing that source ends the problem.

Find what they breed in and take it away. Pick up pet waste daily, keep trash cans lidded and rinsed, turn or cover compost, and clear fallen fruit and wet grass clippings. Check under decks and along fences for a dead animal, which draws blow flies within a day. Treating the shaded spots where adults rest then thins what is left.

Keep them from finding a way in and a reason to stay. Tight window screens, door sweeps and self-closing screen doors block most of them, and a fan blowing out across a patio door makes landing hard. Bag kitchen waste before it goes out and keep outdoor bins away from the doors. Fly-repelling plants and scented sprays do little on their own.
